Review: Salted ( A Lacey Luzzi Mafia Mystery Novel) By: Gina LaManna Amazon Link:

This book is another laugh a minute romp with our favorite characters and each book in the series just keeps getting better and better! haha we see a lot of things come to pass in this story (including a trip to the spa for our 2 besties Lacey and Meg: With hilarious results I might add, and even poor Clay gets in on the spa actions — albeit quite unwillingly!)

Carlos’s jobs for Lacey keep getting more and more intense as we progress through the series and you gotta give our girl props she has one heck of an unorthodox way of getting results! and generally needs Anthony’s assistance for the dangerous stuff but she totally rocks this whole working for the mob thing. The sense of family is even stronger in this book as we see Lacey becoming more and more used to having this raucous group of people having her back. (And finding new ways to dodge Nora’s cookies! Self-preservation at its finest)

The tension between Lacey and Anthony is even more extreme and you can cut the tension with a knife almost! I really like them together haha. She drives him crazy with how she takes risks and dosen’t always think everything through and make a plan before she goes out investigating but somehow he  always 2 steps ahead and knows the best way to be of assistance 😉 but she tries her best to get him to loosen up and just go with it so if gives them this sort  opposites attract kind of relationship and it definitely makes them one of my favorite couples (who are not quite a couple yet haha)

The situations keep getting more intense and dare I say it? Cinematic in scope in these stories and this one is the best yet! It really showed off Gina’s ability to bring the readers into the story and gives us the clearest picture of what is going on and keeps us enraptured until the very end haha. I always know that with her books when I finish the last page i’m gonna have this moment where you are just sitting there blinking and trying to readjust to the real world again! ( not gonna lie, sometimes it takes me a little bit haha you feel like you got ripped out of this place that you weren’t quite ready to leave yet)

I was about twenty minutes early for my shift, but I got up to the bar, grabbed a rag, started wiping it down, bussing some dishes.
“Damn, Luke,” Jake said, watching me work. “You win the lotto or something? Royals win the pennant last night and I forgot to watch?”
“I’m just in a good mood, that’s all,” I said.
I thought about it a moment longer, decided I should tell him more. Impart some wisdom learned from my not-particularly-advanced years.
“When everything’s dark for so damn long and your eyes get used to it,” I said, “just a little glimmer of sunshine lights up the whole world.”
He nodded, then grabbed a bus bin and headed back into the kitchen.
Warren though, Warren wasn’t impressed. He was sitting by one of the daytime barflies, but he’d stopped talking and was just watching me. I was on thin ice, and I knew it. I couldn’t afford to lose my job. A heartbroken, drunk, angry widower is probably as unemployable as the average ex-con.
I came on at the end of the day shift. Warren liked tending bar during the day, because it meant just shooting the shit with the regulars. That day I had a smile for every customer, sparse words of wisdom like day drunks want to hear. Tending bar wasn’t my dream. But to hell with letting that make me lazy. I kept the place clean, I poured drinks like I cared.
I was getting into the swing of it when happy hour kicked in and a few more people filtered through the door. Couple of middle-aged bikers, a retired couple that parked their RV out front.
The door swung open again, letting in a little bit of that early-evening cold, and I glanced up to see a crowd of three women, with two men. One of the women was a reddish blonde, radiant. Sort of stole the light out of the room. It was Rae. Our eyes met and her smile gave the room back its light.
She’d been in jeans at the shelter, but she was in a blue dress now and she looked damn fine in either. Took my mind right off Maggie, faster than I thought it would be possible. I met her eyes, and she gave out a little gasp and giggle. I was probably smiling in surprise myself.
The crowd came over to the bar. I’d thought the other four were two couples, but I realized pretty quick that the black girl with the afro was dating the quiet white guy in a beard and glasses and tattoos, and that the other guy was trying to impress Rae. He had a John Deere hat, but his clothes were way too clean for me to buy it that he worked on a farm. I hated him, right off. I probably would have hated him if he was the best guy in the world, though. The other girl, she was tall, latina, and for some indiscernible reason was interested in the poser farmer.
Most of the time, I’m awful at reading people. But for some reason, at work I can tell you everything about everyone who walks in the door. About who’s into who, about who had a bad day at work. Who wants to get drunk and miserable, who wants to get drunk and happy, who wants to get drunk and start trouble. Maybe it’s some magic of the job, maybe it’s just how people carry themselves at a bar. Helps with tips, that’s for certain. You wingman right, and the money flows in.
Warren, he likes to upsell them drinks when he’s doing that. Get them excited about the top shelf. Not me.
“Hey, Rae,” I said.
“Luke,” she said.
John Deere looked at me like I was the scum of the earth. And maybe I was, but if I was the scum then he was… I don’t know, something worse than scum. Wannabe scum.
She introduced me to her friends. Nicole had the afro, her boyfriend was Eric. The girl with bad taste was Irina, and John Deere had some name but honestly it went in one ear and out the other. He was John Deere to me. Yeah, maybe I’m an asshole.
“So, how do you know this guy?” Deere asked, tossing me a look that said I clearly wasn’t good enough to be friend with someone like Rae.
“Oh, he came in just the other day. Adopted the sweetest dog, a bloodhound.” She turned to me, flashing that dimple high on her cheek. “How is he? You guys call a truce yet?”
“King’s great,” I said. “I mean, he’s probably at home right now, eating everything I’ve ever owned, but I figure I was due for a purge anyway, right?”
It was a lame attempt at humor, but Rae laughed.
“What can I get you all? Friend of Rae’s is a friend of mine.”

Review: 9 Letters By: Blake Austin

This story has all the feels! (And a Hound Dog!) Haha okay I thought that was one of my favorite parts of the story because my fiance and I a year and a half ago also adopted a Bloodhound and Luke’s experience with King is definitely familiar to us! But back to the story! This is a story of trying to heal and live life again after you lose the love of your life. There were parts of this story that were so sweet and then on the flipside there are moments that almost rip your heart out! This wasn’t quite one of those ugly cry books for me but it was one of those books that you suddenly find yourself silently wiping tears away and smiling a little all at the same time! And those to me are the most powerful stories. Luke and Emily were supposed to be happily ever after but life sometimes has other plans and a year after she passed way Luke gets this package of 9 letters that Emily knew he would need in order to being life over without her. He must complete these tasks she sets out for him in each letter before he can read the next one. And gradually we see Luke begin to transform and move on. Interspersed with little moments from their past really gives us a good view of this couple and how much they meant to one another. This is how I wish the movie P.S I Love you went (loved the premise of the movie but the storytelling kind of went flat) But in 9 Letters we get story crafting at its finest! I would highly recommend this debut novel to anyone! Its gritty and real enough to suit those who would dismiss it as overly sappy and still emotional and full of adorable moments for those who love the warm fuzzies.

What a story! There is some dark subject matter in this book and thankfully Mary Catherine deals with it sensitively but also does not hold back when dealing with what someone who has survived assault thinks in the minutes, hours, days afterward. Nami is a strong female character, even in the times that she thinks she is weak or too wrapped up in thoughts of vengeance to be strong she definitely is and this is a story about her journey of healing and regaining her sense of self. There is a love story component to this book but like in most books by this author the insta love is not a primary singular focus which is one of the reasons I continually come back to reading her books. I mean don’t get me wrong I adore a insta love story where the romance is the entire story. But with Mary Catherine’s books we get these amazing female empowering stories to where the story is just as much about a woman discovering what she wants and needs and becoming strong all on her own. In Law we get a hero who is a little quirky and a little mysterious. I almost got a creeper vibe at first but within a couple of pages after we meet him you get that resolved and realize that he is going to be an important part of the story. He’s snarky and more than a little sarcastic and PUSHY! haha but usually in a way that makes Nami pause to consider what he is saying (and sometimes do completely the opposite, she’s a girl after my own heart on that one!) But he’s pretty smart and helps her learn that vengeance isn’t everything. I really enjoyed Raskol (Nami’s furry companion) he was a awesome little dog haha kind of reminded me of mine. When something tramautic happens to you sometimes finding something to nurture helps you heal and begin dealing with life again instead of just shutting down so I love those little moments with him.

Review: Open Hearts By: Erin Hayes

Review: Open Hearts By: Erin Hayes

I have been a huge fan of Erin’s work since I read I’d Rather Be A Witch last year! So I knew with this story we were going to get a quirky unorthodox story with some awesome characters.  What I wasn’t quite expecting was all the intense feels this book inspired or the questions it raised. All of Becks questions and those moments of survivors guilt that she enjoys a fuller life now due to someone else’s tragedy were ones that make you set down the book and go what if? What if this was my reality and how would I deal with it? On a personal level I could relate to this story because I have heart problems myself and have since I was a little kid. Thankfully, its never gotten serious enough to where I needed a transplant! But when you face problems like Becks is experiencing its pretty natural to have those questions. I love the journey she takes in this story. Even though there are some ups and downs its a very real journey that people take.

Then we have Rhys! — he was completely unique all in his own right and from the first time we see him as a little boy it was completely heartbreaking!  Like I was wiping tears away within the first few pages.  Later when we see him on the Triumph racing away from everything that bothers him you sense he values the freedom of the open road. Becks first run in with him was adorably awkward but hilarious all the same and that’s when you know this isn’t going to be your run of the mill romance novel. Its deeper than that!

With these characters (just like in all her other books!) Erin gives us these full of    life quirky characters that are not perfect but with their imperfections and doubts and questions it makes them the most memorable. Typically I read over   300 books a year so I meet a lot of different characters haha and some you forget but some stick in your soul. That is definitely where Becks and Rhys live

What do you do when the man who raped you has the entire police force in his pocket? When you’re called a slut, a whore, and a liar? You get your own justice.

My name is Nami DeGrace, and six months ago I was a normal college student. I was volunteering on the campaign of a man I believed in, a man I thought to be good and noble. Then one night that man forced himself on me and everything changed.

The media reviled me. The police didn’t believe me. My friends abandoned me. I dropped out of college and only have one mission in life: make him pay. That is, until Nick Law came in to my life.

Indomitable, infuriating, and irresistible, Law is complicating things.

On sale for $0.99 for a limited time

Another knock sounded on the door and I burrowed farther into my couch. If it couldn’t hear me, then it couldn’t get me, right?

“Nami open your door! It’s me, Law!” I perked up a bit, looking at my door with less hostility and more interest. Why was Law here? Still, my interest was not enough to get me off the couch. Law was persona non grata in the DeGrace house.

“Go away!” I yelled, curling myself in blankets.

“I will stay here and wake up all of your neighbors if you don’t let me in!”

“Go ahead!” I yelled back. “They hate me anyway!” Silence radiated through the wood, and I hoped that Law had decided against staying. When I’d all but settled back into my alcohol-induced comfort, I heard something truly disturbing.

Loud, operatic singing.

I could hear Law clearly through my door, though the language was unknown. He was bellowing the notes, his voice getting higher and louder. It was beautiful, but it was also incredibly annoying. I didn’t mind him waking up my neighbors—they’d been less than kind to me; I did mind, however, my neighbors calling the police. I didn’t want to deal with the police. Ever again, if I could help it.

I opened my door, angry, slightly tipsy, and using my blanket as a cape. Law didn’t stop singing even though I opened the door. He continued, his voice an operatic majesty that did not belong in my hallway. He even gesticulated with his hands.

“Stop!” I yelled. Law continued to sing, gesturing at my apartment that I blocked with my body. I glared furiously at him as I let him enter my apartment. He only stopped his song when I closed the door behind us.

“What the hell was that?” I fumed, trying to block him farther entry into my apartment. If I could keep him contained to just the entryway, then I technically hadn’t lost.

“Puccini. Madama Butterfly.”

I scoffed and, remembering why I hated Law, got to the point. “Why did you come here?”

“I decided that I do care what you think of me.” Before I could respond, Law pulled me in both arms and kissed me on the mouth, hard.
